Cooking with Your Kids: How to Make Fresh Guacamole

I love to cook, and I’m a sucker for fresh produce. And the only thing that makes cooking even more fun is that my small people love it too. That time in the kitchen spent cooking, baking, slicing and mixing helps my children expand their palates (far more advanced than I had at their age!).

Making guacamole with kids

Would you believe both of my small people LOVE avocados and guacamole? And they adore being the ones to make it.

I was in my 30s before I developed a taste for both, and guacamole a favorite in our home. It is simple to make and one that I trust my kiddos can handle.

Here's how we make our favorite guac.

Ingredients for fresh guacamole:

  • 2 avocados
  • 1 small roma tomato
  • garlic salt
  • lime
  • pinch of sugar

When cutting an avocado, you cut slowly all the way around the center, starting at the stem and circling until you reach the stem on the other side. Twist softly and pry apart.

Carefully remove the pit and then slice the avocado vertically, horizontally and then scoop into a bowl.

This is my favorite part as I love to see a perfectly ripe avocado open.

Delaney's favorite part is the 'mashing,’ of course. Gently add diced tomato, garlic salt, fresh juice from half a lime and a pinch of sugar or stevia to bring it all together.

Then it’s time to sit back, grab some chips, and enjoy!

And I always keep a first-aid kit stocked with BAND AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages and NEOSPORIN® handy when we are cooking or baking – just in case. I’ve taught them how to handle sharp knives used for cooking, and I always keep a close eye on them. Still, accidents happen and I’m always prepared.
