5 Tips to Help Teens Manage Stress

I remember being a teenager and feeling like life was a bit out of control from all the schoolwork, busy schedules and after-school sports. Apparently not much has changed since those days, and my own daughters occasionally feel the same stress I did. The good news is that there are very simple steps that we can take together to help our teens keep stress at bay.
1. Switch up the routine.

A couple of our favorite ways to combat stress involves removing ourselves from our normal routines. I encourage my girls to get out of the house and get some fresh air. Going for a quick walk around the block or a long walk on a local nature trail can make the difference between a head full of anxiety and a fresh, clear mind.

2. Exercise.

A regular exercise routine is also very important for managing stress, no matter what age you are! With so many changes happening and creating invevitable stress in a teen's life, regular exercise creates a dependable schedule, and it’s something they can look forward to every day.

3. Start a hobby.

I also encourage my kids to find something they love to do as a hobby. We make sure that they have time (no matter how busy they get) to do what they love. My oldest loves to read, so I make sure to keep a good book in the house or in our travel bag.  
4. Connect with a loved one.

My favorite tip to help teens manage their stress levels is to take time each day to connect with a loved one to share what is on their minds and problem solve together. Most of the time, just having someone you care about listen to how you are feeling and offer up some advice can knock stress out right away.
5. Stay healthy.

Good health is vital to maintaining balance when the stress of life inevitably increases. A bedrock of good health is hydration, so I make sure our daughters always drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. I also love having soft, moisturized skin, and I use scents that bring me instant happiness. Lavender has always been at the top of my list because the scent is so relaxing.
