8 Keys to Healthy Winter Skin

Ah, winter. That glorious time of year when snowflakes fall softly on fir trees, friends gather together for festive dinner parties, and our skin becomes a chapped, cracked, dry skin nightmare. Joy of joys!

How to get healthy skin in winter

But before you resign yourself to a season of scaly knees, chapped lips and cracked hands, take a peek at our 8 simple keys to healthy winter skin. These little changes can make a big difference – and they just might change the way you think about winter skin, forever.

How to get healthy skin in winter

#1: Moisturize from head to toe
Rescue dry, chapped hands with a hand cream for colder weather (we suggest Neutrogena® Norwegian Formula® Hand Cream). For all-over moisture, keep your body covered with Neutrogena® Norwegian Formula® Moisture Wrap Daily Repair Body Lotion. Faces need moisture too – so we recommend AVEENO ULTRA-CALMING® Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15. And don’t forget to hydrate nasal passages with saline drops… and drink water, too. It’s just a good idea.

how to exfoliate

#2: Exfoliate twice a week
When you don’t exfoliate, dry skin builds up on the outside and acts like a wall that might slow moisturizers from penetrating. When you do exfoliate, moisturizers can absorb and leave skin soft. Exfoliate twice a week with a gentle product like Neutrogena® Healthy Skin Boosters Daily Scrub or Neutrogena® Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub and your skin will be forever grateful!

Use sunscreen in winter

#3: Help protect your skin from the sun
No, this isn’t a mental exercise to try and save on heating costs (although we admit we’ve done that, too). Rather, it’s a reminder that sunscreen during the cold season is a crucial step to healthy winter skin. Protect yourself from aging and cancer-causing rays that shine through windows and clouds (and reflect off of snow) with the daily application of a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. AVEENO® Protect and Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 50 for Face is a good choice!

Heal cracked skin

#4: Help heal and repair cracked skin
Like fruitcake or the Elf on the Shelf, cracked and chapped skin is something we’d all like to officially banish from the holiday season…but somehow it just keeps showing up. Until now! Nurture chapped lips with a beeswax, jelly or balm like Neutrogena® Lip Moisturizer with SPF 15. As for elbows and heels, apply AVEENO® Skin Relief Moisture Repair Cream immediately after bathing or showering to lock in moisture. Avoid rubbing and scratching, and, for severe dry skin symptoms, try an intensive formula like Neutrogena® Norwegian Formula® Intensive Moisture Wrap Body Treatment to find lasting relief.

Take short showers in winter

#5: Use warm water not hot
Long, hot showers sound like a great idea on a cold winter day. But when it comes to your skin, extended exposure to hot water and steam strips skin of natural oils, making dry skin itchier. If severe dry skin or eczema symptoms decide to show up for the holiday season, turn the water down to warm – and try soaking in AVEENO® Soothing Bath Treatment. Don’t forget to moisturize immediately after bathing!

Avoid chemical masks in winter

#6: Use masks instead of chemical peels
Aggressive chemical peels can exacerbate redness and irritation in already dry winter skin. Instead, opt for a gentler toner like NEUTROGENA® Alcohol-Free Toner, a deep hydrating mask, or an intensive night cream like RoC® MULTI CORREXION® 5 In 1 Restoring Night Cream for healthy looking, beautiful skin – gently.

Use a humidifier in winter

#7: Use a humidifier
Humidifiers are like angels sent from above when it comes to addressing cold symptoms and helping us rest easier at night. But did you know they can also help keep hair, skin, and nails hydrated too? Just be sure to regularly clean your magical humidifying machine according to the operating instructions to avoid pesky (and smelly) mildew & mold problems.

What to pack for your skin in winter

#8: Take the basics with you
The winter months often include travel, and dry skin doesn’t always behave so well on the go. So make sure to pack a little bag for skin care that is specialized for the colder season, just to give your skin a little extra support. That would include a primer, an exfoliator, a moisturizer, a cleanser, a mask and sunscreen!
