What’s In My Diaper Bag? Essential Items Moms Should Always Pack

What to pack in your diaper bag

There’s an eight-year gap between my daughter and my son, who was born in May. So, I had forgotten the importance of a well-stocked diaper bag – that is, until my baby had his first blowout when we were out in public.

I’d gotten cocky: “Oh, we're just running out quickly,” I said to myself as we left the house. “I don't need a diaper bag.”

We had just pulled into the parking lot of the shopping center when I heard the sound of thunder coming from the back seat. My baby boy looked up at me with big eyes filled with satisfaction, and I just had to laugh.

Well done, universe. Lesson learned.

Since then, I make sure I have a diaper bag with me at all times. I even keep one in the car in the event that I forget my main bag at home. There really is a science to packing a diaper bag. If you pack too much, it can get heavy and be too cumbersome to carry along with the baby. If you try to keep it super light and only pack the absolute essentials, there's a chance that you won't have what you need in the case of a baby emergency.

After a couple of months of trial and error, I think I finally have it right.

What to pack in your diaper bag

Choose the right diaper bag for your lifestyle. Before you stock your diaper bag, it's important to choose the right bag for your lifestyle. You may find, like me, that you need a couple of bags to change out depending on what you're doing. I love to carry a backpack style bag when I know I’m going to be active. If we're going to be doing a lot of walking, this bag is easy to carry and holds everything from diapers to my water bottle. Other styles you might consider are messenger, tote, or stroller bags. There are even diaper bags that look like designer purses for fancy nights out with your little one!

Keep your diaper bag stocked up. After you pick your bag out, you're ready to stock it up. Obviously, you want to make sure you have diapers packed, but do you know what else a well-stocked diaper bag needs? I don't want you to end up like the old me, sitting in the car, willing to do anything for a baby change of clothes, and a pack of wipes!

I put together a simple checklist that will help you fill your diaper bag with all of the essentials you'll need for going out and about with your baby.

Diaper bag checklist:

  • one complete change of clothes (bodysuit, pants, socks, jacket)
  • diapers (check frequently to make sure you always have to right size in the bag)
  • baby wipes
  • changing pad
  • gallon storage bag to put used diapers in case you don't have a place to throw them away
  • baby blanket
  • nursing cover-up
  • JOHNSON’S® hand & face wipes
  • pacifier (and another one for a backup)
  • hand sanitizer
  • burp cloth
  • bib
  • one or two toys (simple wooden toys are especially good)
  • sling carrier (optional; comes in really handy and easy to transport)
  • teething ring (optional)
  • water bottle for mom
  • DESITIN® Maximum Strength Zinc Oxide Diaper Rash Paste
  • facial tissue

Going out with a baby is stressful enough. Relieve some of the pressure by making sure your diaper bag is packed and ready for any adventure!
