How to treat and prevent diaper rash

It’s virtually inevitable that you – and, unfortunately, your baby – will deal with diaper rash. Hot weather, cold weather, newborn or toddler, diaper rash is one of those things that is tough to prevent and no fun for anybody. But with vigilance and preparation you can help to prevent it, or at least to nip it in the bud.

Since I know I am not the only mom with this concern, I have a few tricks to keep your baby’s bottom clean, clear and dry.

Here are my five tips for parents when dealing with diaper rash on their babies:

1. Change diapers frequently.

Make sure you pat your child’s skin dry rather than rub. Also, make sure you clean well at each diaper change. If your baby has sensitive skin, be cautious when considering wipes with alcohol or fragrance, and ask your doctor what is right for your child. As an added tip, you may use cotton balls and a squirt water bottle to clean sensitive areas.

2. Use a skin-soothing ointment.

Once your baby’s bottom is fully dry, you can apply a soothing ointment to protect your child's skin from stool and urine. My personal recommendation is DESITIN® Rapid Relief Zinc Oxide Diaper Rash Cream, which forms the very needed protective layer on your baby’s skin to soothe and relieve the discomfort caused by the rash.

3. Re-diaper loosely.

Put your child's diaper on loosely, or use a diaper that's a little big on your child to allow for better air circulation.

4. Embrace diaper-free time!

Fresh air is the natural way to keep the irritated area dry. Spending some time outside is a great option. If weather does not allow it, then time indoors on a floor that’s easy to clean will work. Oh, and I can also assure you, your baby will love the diaper freedom!

5. The best treatment is prevention. Now, here’s my ultimate secret to keep diaper rashes away: Once your baby's bottom is healthy and happy again, you can use the same DESITIN® Rapid Relief Zinc Oxide Diaper Rash Cream that you used to treat the rash, as a daily bottom cream. This easy-to-apply formula makes it perfect to use at every diaper change to prevent diaper rash from occurring in the first place.

Now that you can relax knowing your baby's bum will be dry and happy, no matter how hot it is outside, you can get back to the rest of your fun and crazy life!
